Vogue model, style icon and David Bailey’s muse, Penelope Tree was the ultimate Sixties It-Girl. Tree was discovered in 1966 by Vogue’s editor when she appeared at the Black and White Ball thrown by Truman Capote at the Plaza Hotel. She was part of what a journalist in 1967 called modeling’s new “Personality Cult,” which valued qualities other than girl-next-door-prettiness. Celebrated for her famous genealogy, she lived outside the norm and challenged conventional beauty by shaving her eyebrows and pasting false lashes on the bottom rims of her eyes. “I felt I was an alien so I didn’t see anything wrong with looking like one,” she told The Observer in 2008. We are really looking forward to visiting MoMA this summer, especially the new Rain Room! The 1,000 square foot space is in a state of perpetual downpour except for the path that you choose to walk. “Rain Room pushes people outside their comfort zones, extracting their base auto-responses and playing with intuition”, explain its creators, the London technology and art collective rAndom International. Check it out until July 28th.
